Addressing the two sides of Jacques Lipchitz’s identity as both a sculptor and a collector, this extensive publication is devoted to the art he created and especially to the wealth of objects he accumulated. Lipchitz’s collection of some 3,000 artifacts from Africa and Oceania, the Americas and Asia, medieval Europe and the ancient world was gifted to the Israel Museum by his family. The publication highlights nearly 100 of the most extraordinary objects in it, testimony to the cultures, forms, motifs, techniques, and ways of expression that enriched his own creativity. Following introductory essays by international experts on the Lithuanian-born French artist – focusing on the Israel Museum’s holding of his sculptures, paintings, prints, and drawings – the highlights of the collection are presented in a lavish photographic album illuminated by curatorial texts.
