- In the 1950s Thomas Dam designed the Goodluck Troll, a creature based on Scandinavian folklore. He wanted to create a figure that, although far from beautiful, would have the ability to make people smile and feel good – hence its open-armed posture. Although he originally carved the trolls in wood, after a trip to the United States he got the idea to make them in rubber, and many editions of the Dam Troll were developed in rubber and dressed up in different clothes. The Troll remained highly popular in the 1960s and 1970s, enjoying a renaissance in the 1990s after the death of its creator. In 2015 Dam Things in cooperation with bySommer relaunched the Troll as a design icon, producing trolls in polyresin and with authentic sheep-wool hair that can be combed, washed, and shaped in different styles. Thus, Troll fans can now have a fashionable memory of their childhood as a design object decorating their home.
