Unrealistic and uncanny arrangements of familiar objects abound in the works of Belgian Surrealist artist René Magritte. The enchanting, mysterious painting The Castle of the Pyrenees (1959) became one of his most famous works and was frequently reproduced. The Israel Museum received the painting as a gift from Magritte’s friend Harry Torczyner, an international lawyer, poet, and writer, who commissioned it from the artist.
