The mitzvot of the Purim holiday, which include sending food gifts to friends (mishloah manot), are integrated into this plate’s elegant decoration. At the center is the figure of Haman leading Mordecai the Jew on his horse, as recounted in the Scroll of Esther. Interestingly, the Hebrew inscription on the plate’s edges, “Sending gifts to one another and presents to the poor,” substitutes the word mishloah with its Yiddish variant (shalah).
A utensil as well as an objet d’art, the plate is perfect for use in a Purim feast – the mitzvah that evokes the king’s feast mentioned in the Megillah. The feast’s delicacies will be especially tasty on this beautiful plate.
The original plate was gifted to the Museum by Eliyahu Sidi from Jerusalem, in memory of his parents, Rafael and Hannah Sidi, Paris
