The cover of this attractive notebook shows a detail from a work by Chinese-born contemporary artist Ai Weiwei. In it, chunks of wood recovered from ancient Chinese temples are arranged in a dense, perfectly ordered structure. The work was shown at an exhibition of Ai’s works, held at the Israel Museum in 2017; the show, visited by thousands, left a lasting, powerful impression. The artist used different artistic techniques and an original, subversive idiom to express his social criticism, particularly of the Chinese regime. Many of Ai’s works combine the magnificent heritage of his homeland’s material culture with sublime poetry and an incisive critical outlook.
