In the last two decades, the acclaimed Israeli artist Gil Marco Shani has created numerous installations and what is best described as architectural interventions. For Buses, presented at the Israel Museum in 2018, he built a space between two gallery levels. Following a narrow passage and going down a few steps, the disoriented visitors found themselves suddenly facing two massive tourist buses through a glass door in what seemed like an underground parking at the heart of the Museum. Along with the fabricated buses, the installation ingeniously reproduced effects of sound and temperature to complement the optical illusion, enhancing the visitor’s sense of bewilderment and mystery. In this richly illustrated, multilayered book, exhibition curator Aya Miron presents an enlightening analysis of the installation and Sarah Breitberg-Semel conducts a frank conversation with the artist that addresses fundamental aspects of his work. A rich album presents images of Shani’s other installations – such as Safari (2001), Rain (2003), and School for Terror (2006) – enabling us to place Buses in a broader context.
