In her new, compelling video work, artist-actress Raida Adon – born in Acre to a family that includes members of all three religions – addresses profound universal questions of identity, displacement, and the yearning for a home, while also referencing the complexity of local Palestinian and Israeli narratives. To quote from exhibition curator Amitai Mendelsohn’s essay in the catalogue, Adon’s “epic work may be telling us that she believes the conflict in this land could be resolved if we recognized one another’s humanity . . . herein lies the work’s strength: it claims the right to be naive, to be humane, and to overcome the past.” The catalogue also presents powerful full-page images from Strangeness and a discussion of Adon’s previous videos by art historian Gannit Ankori.
