Viewers were amazed by the huge carpet of porcelain sunflower seeds in the famous eponymous work by Chinese-born contemporary artist Ai Weiwei; even more astounding was the fact that the seeds had been hand-painted by an “army” of assistants. The exhibition of Ai’s works, held at the Israel Museum in 2017 and visited by thousands, left a lasting, powerful impression. The artist used different techniques and an original, subversive artistic idiom to express his social criticism, particularly of the Chinese regime. Many of Ai’s works combine the glorious heritage of his homeland’s material culture with sublime poetry and an incisive critical outlook.
