The Talmud teaches us: “On the first day one kindles one light, and from there on, gradually increases the number of lights…”
The candle holders of this special Hanukkah lamp, which are not affixed to a single base, recall a custom from antiquity, when Hannukah was celebrated by lighting separate clay lamps; on every day of the eight-day holiday, another clay lamp would be added to the twinkling row of lights. The design of the candle holders, in the form of little high-backed chairs engraved with the Hebrew words “Hannukah candle,” is reminiscent of European Hanukkah lamps from the 18th and 19th centuries, designed as benches or sofas in the style of the period.
This charming item, based on a Hanukkah lamp from Poland, will light up your home and enhance its beauty after the holiday season as well.
The original item is part of the Feuchtwanger collection, purchased and donated to the Museum by Baruch and Ruth Rappaport, Geneva.
