Inscribed on the rim of the plate are the words that, according to Rabban Gamaliel, must be recited on Passover Eve to fulfill one’s obligation: Pesah (Passover), Matzah (unleavened bread), and Maror (bitter herbs). The illustration at the plate’s center, apparently depicting the Exodus, is probably based on Orientalist prints from the mid- to late 19th century. Such prints, featuring fanciful scenes of the East, captured the European imagination and spread throughout the continent.
