One of the three mitzvoth entrusted to women is lighting the Sabbath candles (the other two are separating the challah and observing niddah). Like other ceremonial objects, these candlesticks are beautifully designed in hammered and engraved silver. They appear to have been originally created by a local Jewish silversmith and intended for use by wealthy members of the community. The curved base of each candlestick is adorned with a vegetal motif, bearing the clear signs of a master’s hand.
