- Hanukkah lamps from Poland have a distinct feature: apart from the backplate, they have two side panels, each of which is topped by a candleholder. These were used for the Sabbath candles all year round, and during Hanukkah the right-hand candleholder was used for the shamash (servant light).Recalling papercut art, the backplate’s elegant design incorporates animals such as gazelles, lions, birds, and even imaginary creatures.
